For a man who has gone through depression and drug addiction, divorce twice, serious personal injury (after a 1969 motorcycle accident in Martha’s Vineyard) and family bereavement (with the loss of his brother Alex in 1993), it is astonishing that James Taylor’s life in music has been largely an expression of sensitivity, hope and compassion – not of self-pity, anger or blind hostility. For these reasons alone, I appreciate James Taylor music so much.

Yesterday we saw a batch of really cute photos of Natalie Portman‘s babydaddy-to-be Benjamin Millepied dancing his buns off on the streets of NYC, NY. It turns out that Ben was actually filming a commercial for Yves St. Laurent. Today, we get to see a few more photos from the set of the YSL commercial shoot and as you can see from the photos below, Benjamin really got into the swing of things this time around.

Aww … I bet this commercial is going to turn out really well … but, I have to say, I’m kinda bummed that this turned out to be a commercial shoot and not an impromptu and random dance session. I really loved the idea that Benjamin was just walking along and then BAM! he decided to bust out some serious dance moves right there on the streets of NYC. Ah well … it’s still fun seeing him in action. Very soon, tho, Benjamin will really have cause to dance and celebrate because he’s about to become a father … and that alone is reason enough to dance in the streets ;D

Yesterday was a totally chilled out day. Plans to hang out last night got pushed back to Wednesday and that left me with a very sunny and hot day here in LA to enjoy all by myself. I have just started to recover from my illness of late so it was nice to just relax and chill out … in the heat

I got out of the house for a bit to soak up some sun, which was really nice. I toyed with the idea of hanging out at the beach but the traffic was a huge deterrent. I really just laid low, kept my Monday pretty simple. Tonight, tho, I am SO excited to FINALLY get to see Thor! I’ll be seeing the movie at a screening tonight and I’m just way too excited. Popcorn, candy and the god of Thunder? Yes, please!!

The rockabilly scene, just like pretty much any other scene I can think of, has its purists. And just as with all purists, rockabilly’s version can be a little hard to take sometimes. After all, what does it mean to be a rockabilly purist? How can anyone identify what is pure rockabilly and what is not? In my view, you can’t. Rockabilly has too many forms of purity to narrow it down quite that easily!

It’s no secret that there were many people who didn’t like Elvis. They didn’t like his long hair, his raw sensuality, his “suggestive” stage presence, his success, his fame, or anything else about him. So it’s not too farfetched an idea to believe that his selection for service was perhaps less than random. If someone did pull a few strings to get Elvis inducted–and thus put a damper on his career–they didn’t understand who they were dealing with and the movement that was under way.

First off, music is a great stress reliever. That is why it is a good idea to learn guitar. If you are an employed person, you are always subject to the daily hustle and bustle of life. An eight-hour job can be very tiring and sometimes the stereo is just not enough. Listening to your own music is just amazingly soothing.
